Del Mar, N. C. Transit Team Up For 'Pony Express' Ticket

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and North County Transit District have joined forces to offer racing fans a notable way to enjoy a discounted weekend day at the races minus traffic hassles and parking fees.

The “Weekend Pony Express” combo ticket offers a three-zone COASTER pass (normally $11) and a Del Mar Clubhouse admission (normally $10) for the single low price of $13. The full-day ticket is valid on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer and also includes rides on NCTD’s BREEZE and SPRINTER.

Those using the “Weekend Pony Express” arrangement are ferried from the Solana Beach train station – approximately one mile from the track -- on DMTC’s fleet of English, double-decker busses, which meet all trains both arriving and leaving the station throughout the day. Those using the service instead of driving realize an additional $10 savings by not having to pay a parking fee at the track.

The “Pony Express” tickets are available in all ticket vending machines at every NCTD station by Ticketpressing the “current promotions” button. Additionally, they can be pre-purchased on-line at  “Pony Express” riders will be able to pick up their admission tickets at the track’s Diamond Club booth near the Stretch Run gate in close proximity to the double-decker bus stop.

The COASTER is NCTD’s popular train line that runs north and south between downtown San Diego and Oceanside. The BREEZE is NCTD’s bus division that covers virtually all of North County San Diego. The SPRINTER is its light-rail train that runs east and west between Oceanside and Escondido.
Both the COASTER and the BREEZE (101 route) run directly to Solana Beach station. Schedules for any of the services can be obtained on-line at

On Fridays, the shuttle-to-the-track service begins at 11:40 a.m. and continues throughout the day. Return service from the track runs from mid-afternoon until approximately 9:45 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays the shuttles begin at 9:10 a.m. and continue throughout the day. Return service is available until approximately 9:45 p.m. on Saturdays and until approximately 7 p.m. on Sundays.

Del Mar’s seven-week season begins on Wednesday, July 18 and runs through Wednesday, September 5. Racing is conducted on a Wednesday through Sunday basis with one additional day of sport on Labor Day Monday, September 3. First post is 2 p.m. except on Fridays when racing begins at 4 p.m.

NCTD has noted that it also will offer its “Pony Express” ticket on Labor Day, when it conducts a special holiday service that falls in line with its normal Sunday schedule.
