Baffert trained Consequent made her debut a winning one, going two turns in Friday’s Feature for two-year-old maiden fillies. With Bank Shot (35-1) and Adrian Escobedo pressing the pace throughout on the outside of Shane’s The Brain, favored Consequent (6-5) sat mid pack in the backstretch five lengths off the pace, rallied around the far turn under confident urging from Juan Hernandez to challenge Bank Shot in the final furlong. Consequent took the lead passing the sixteenth pole and held off a final charge from Bank Shot to win by ½ lengths. Fortunate Truth (22-1) was last throughout, angled four wide and chased the dueling pair to get the show 2 ¾ lengths in front of Conquistadora.
A Juddemonte homebred, Consequent, who is by Into Mischief out of the Uncle Mo mare Cognitive, is a full sister to two-time stakes winner Show Card, and has added $36,000 to her bank roll.
Consequent returned $4.60, $3.40 and $2.60. Trained by Ryan Hanson, Bank Shot paid $18.80, and Fortunate Truth, trained by Dan Blacker and ridden by Ricky Gonzalez returned $5.20 to show.
Fractions on the race were 22.44, 46.56, 1:11.53 and 1:38.15.
With heavy rain forecasted overnight, live racing is cancelled for Saturday. Live racing resumes on Sunday with a nine-race card, first post is 12:30 PM.
