What a View Faces Ten in California Dreamin' Stakes

Finish Line Racing’s What a View, a Grade I winner during his lengthy career who is approaching the $l million mark in earnings, returns to action after a year’s layoff Friday* when he will carry highweight of 127 pounds versus ten rivals in the featured $150,000 California Dreamin’ Stakes at Del Mar.

The eight-year-old gelding, who earned his Grade I stripes by winning the Kilroe Mile in 2016, has not competed since finishing ninth in the Grade II Del Mar Mile last August. Previously trained by Kenny Black, the son of Vronsky is now conditioned by Phil D’Amato. Norbert Arroyo, Jr. has the mount on What a View who has won eight of 27 starts and $903,706.

Likely favorite in the mile and one-sixteenth grass course contest for California-bred horses is The Hunted, who comes into the race in sharp form. Tiago Pereira has the mount at 123 pounds. The son of Unusual Heat won the Crystal Water at Santa Anita in late April.

Others in the field are Tule Fog, 119, Rafael Bejarano; Grecian Fire, 123, Mike Smith; Ashleyluvssugar, 125, Brice Blanc; The Street Fighter, 121, Edwin Maldonado; Hardboot, 119, Mario Gutierrez; Brandothebartender, 121, Joe Talamo; Acclimate, 123, Martin Garcia; Ultimate Bango, 121, Ruben Fuentes, and Smokey Image, 119, Flavien Prat.

Ashleyluvssugar, like What a View, an eight-year-old gelding, has won $1.4 million with ten victories in 34 outings but is winless for the past two years. He won the 2016 Del Mar Handicap. Acclimate won the mile and three-quarters San Juan Capistrano in June at Santa Anita, but will be dropping back to a middle distance in the California Dreamin.’
