Upsets Trigger $203,127 Carryover Saturday at Del Mar

More surprises popped up Saturday at Del Mar forcing a second straight carryover in the track’s Pick Six pool, this one rising to a husky $203,127. In all likelihood, the “chase” money that will come Sunday for the exotic bet is likely to drive the total prize over the $1-million mark.

Saturday’s “new” wagering money crested at $277,096 – going after the Friday carryover of $55,093 -- and the pool closed at $332,189.  In addition to the track’s “regular” Pick Six pool, its new Single Ticket Jackpot pool – requiring, of course, a single ticket winner -- also climbed after two days of misses and now stands at $43,527.

Saturday’s six-race bet began with the afternoon’s featured race, the $80,445 Let It Ride Stakes. The longshot Defiantly with Hall of Famer Gary Stevens in the tack scooted home first on the lawn and returned $29.60 for $2.

The subsequent races in the sequence went this way:

(5th Race) Feel Freely (jockey Iggy Puglisi) at $31.60; (6th Race) Buymeabond (Tyler Baze) at $7; (7th Race) Pedro Cerrano (Norberto Arroyo, Jr.) at $7.60; (8th Race) He Will (Mike Smith) at $8.60, and (9th Race) Foolish to Deceive (Flavien Prat) at $9.

The winning number sequence was 4-9-8-3-9-7.

Racing Sunday at Del Mar begins at 12:30 p.m. The Pick Six will be conducted on races 4 through 9.
