Walthnan Racing’s Subsanador, an Argentinian horse being pointed for a run in the August 22 Pacific Classic, drilled a mile between races Thursday at Del Mar in 1:37.25. He had Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith in the irons for the exercise that went off between the shore track’s 6th and 7th races.

The chestnut 7-year-old was a seven-time winner in his native land and has captured a pair of stakes in North America. He’s a millionaire with $1,024,824 on his ledger. His current trainer is Hall of Famer Richard Mandella who reached back for an “old school” training method, saying he wanted his horse to see and feel the crowd to get his adrenaline flowing for his upcoming big date in the mile and one-quarter test that carries Grade I status and a $1-million purse.

His splits along the way were :24.28, :48.38, 1:13.13, 1:25.46 and 1:37.25.

Smith went down on his belly and urged the horse strongly through the lane.

Currently, there are 11 horses considered as possible starters in the Pacific Classic, which will be run for the 36th time.
