Seven promising 3-year-old fillies will match strides Sunday at Del Mar in the 49th edition of the Torrey Pines Stakes. The Grade III offering carries a purse of $150,000 as well as a nice chunk of black type.
Likely favorite in the main track mile is the chestnut filly Rabeeba, who races out of the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and in the silks of Michael Lund Petersen.
Folks may remember that Baffert and Petersen teamed up a few years back with another female, this one the multiple Grade I stakes winner of more than $2-million Adare Manor. Rabeeba, who is two for two so far in her brief career, is by Curlin and drew a bid of $750,000 as a yearling at the Keeneland September Sale. For her first go with stakes types, Baffert has matched her up with top rider Juan Hernandez and they’ll break from Post 3 in the lineup.
The Torrey Pines, won last year by the crack Cal-bred Om N Joy, has proven a good stop along the way for such stars as Stellar Wind (2015), Beholder (2013) and Pussycat Doll (2005). Del Mar kingpin Baffert has already won it seven times.
Others of note in the cast include Reddam Racing’s homebred She’s No Quant (winner of the Fleet Treat for Cal-breds on July 24) and Legacy Ranch’s Mohaven, a three time Cal-bred stakes winner so far in her eight-race career.
The Torrey Pines will be Race 7 on the 10-race Sunday card. First post for the afternoon will be the usual 2 p.m. with the stakes scheduled to go off at approximately 5 p.m.
