Seven Cal-Bred Distaffers Sprint in Friday's Headliner

Following a break after a big week of Breeders’ Cup racing at Del Mar, the horses get back into action Friday with an eight-race card highlighted by an allowance/claiming turf sprint featuring California-bred fillies and mares.

The feature will carry a $72,000 purse and has lured seven Golden State gals ready to speed five furlongs on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course. Likely favorite in the mix is Eclipse Thoroughbreds, Barber and Wachtel Stable’s Hot Rageous, a 3-year-old daughter of the fast horse Idiot Proof who comes into the dash off a pair of sprint victories on the synthetic surface at Golden Gate Fields.

Hot Rageous has won three of her eight lifetime starts – all of them this year – and trainer Peter Miller has secured the saddle services of leading rider Flavien Prat for his charge. They’ll break from Post 6 in the lineup Friday.

Here’s the full field for the headliner from the rail out with riders and morning line odds:

Rick or Sharon Waller’s Lava Lane (Ricky Gonzalez, 5/2); Steve Moger’s Acai (Juan Hernandez, 6-1); e-racing.com’s Shylock Eddie (Umberto Rispoli, 4-1); Baseline Equine’s Keep Your Coil (Tyler Baze, 8-1); Mena or Ruiz’s Righteously (Diego Herrera, 12-1); Hot Rageous, and Jeff Ganje’s Mamba Queen (Abel Cedillo, 6-1).

Lava Lane was a good second under these conditions here on September 3 in her most recent appearance. The 4-year-old by the late Unusual Heat races out of the barn of Phil D’Amato and shows several sharp recent works for her return.

Shylock Eddie is a chestnut mare by Square Eddie who’ll be making the 41st start of her career. The 6-year-old has knocked on the door multiple times at this level, but is still looking for that breakthrough race.

Mamba Queen scored her first win on September 10 at Golden Gate in a straight maiden race going five furlongs on the green. The 3-year-old by Square Eddie races under the handling of trainer Jeff Bonde.

First post Friday is at 12:30 p.m.
