The gray veteran Rodrigoknows walked his beat in fine fashion Thursday at Del Mar and came home a winner by a length and a quarter in the allowance feature at a mile on the main track.

The 6-year-old by Cat Burglar covered the distance in 1:38.55 to best eight rivals in the $81,000 test for California-bred 3-year-olds and up. It was his first victory in a year and a half, but his fourth overall and the winner’s share of $27,600 pushed his career earnings to $198,404.

He was ridden by Kazushi Kimura and is trained by the veteran conditioner Hector Palma. The winner paid an even $21 to his backers on an overcast afternoon at the shore.

Finishing second was Irving Ventures’ Winning Patriot, who had a head on Four Quarters Corp’s Practical Blame.

Top rider on the afternoon’s card was Hall of Famer Joel Rosario, who finished first four times and is now the leading rider at the summer session.
