The Mark and Patricia Cofer Trust’s Nesso’s Lastharrah, the longest shot in the field, sat “in the garden” for most of the six and a half furlong trip of Friday’s feature at Del Mar, then fired his best shot straightening for home and came away a length and a half winner.

The 5-year-old horse by Sharp Azteca took his commands from rider Emisael Jaramillo behind a trio of speedsters, then went right on by inside the eighth pole for his tally, which was worth $40.80 to his backers on a sunny afternoon at the shore oval.

Finishing second was Nick Alexander’s homebred Speedy Wilson, who had a length and three quarters on Muir Hut Stables’ Simple Song, the race favorite.

The Florida-bred winner, who is trained by Jeff Bonde, was capturing the seventh race of his career in his 21st start and picked up a prize of $49,200 for his efforts. He now has earnings of $333,480.

Racing will resume at Del Mar Saturday with a first post of 2 p.m.
