A Grade II turf test for fillies and mares and a sprint stakes for Cal-bred juveniles highlight a 10-race card Labor Day at Del Mar as the shore oval races ahead to the conclusion of its summer of ’26 racing season.
The grass test is the 69th edition of the John C. Mabee Stakes at nine furlongs out of the track’s unique infield chute. It’s all of nine furlongs on the green and 10 distaff runners have signed on for it. They’ll be battling for a total prize of $250,000 and the black type that comes with a race of its quality.
The Mabee will go as Race 9 on the program and is likely to have an “off” time of approximately 5:30 p.m.
Earlier in the afternoon seven colts and geldings will match strides over six furlongs in the 37th running of the I’m Smokin Stakes. The dash for Cal-bred juveniles carries a purse of $100,000 and is the final of eight Cal-bred stakes presentations that have been offered during the Del Mar stand.
The horse to beat in the Mabee is the Estate of Brereton C. Jones and Little Feather Racing’s Thought Process, a multiple stakes winner who has captured seven of her 10 starts during three seasons at the racetrack. The now 4-year-old by Collected comes into the test of a pair of 2026 graded grass tallies and has been hung the 8/5 favorite in the test. Trainer Phil D’Amato has her regular rider, Hector I. Berrios, in the saddle once again.
The I’m Smokin’ is Race 6 on the card and should go off at approximately 4 p.m.
The horse to beat in the Cal-bred test is Reddam Racing’s Net Par, a homebred gray by Pavel who comes into the test off a game score in the Graduation Stakes here on August 7. Juan Hernandez was up that day and trainer Antonio Garcia sticks with a winner and has the top rider aboard once more.
First post for the finale is 1:30 p.m.
