Fred Maas, a multi-talented executive who has served in a dozen different roles in industry, politics, sports and development – while along the way living and loving a role as a serious horse racing fan – has been named as the latest member of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s Board of Directors.

Maas, 68, is currently the Los Angeles Chargers Chief of Staff and Counselor, where he oversees all business and legal functions.

His rich working background goes from coast to coast, starting with him growing up in Rochester, NY and graduating cum laude from the Syracuse University College of Law. He subsequently served in a variety of capacities in national, state and local politics, including stints with Senators Bob Dole and John McCain, Jack Kemp and Governor Mitch Daniels among others.

He headed up MRV Systems LLC, a manufacturer of marine robotic vehicles for the oceanographic and defense industries. He also served as chairman and CEO of the San Diego Centre City Development Corporation, overseeing redevelopment activities in downtown San Diego. He additionally led the partnership around Black Mountain Ranch in San Diego, a large undeveloped property that has since become home to several exceptional residential communities, including Santaluz and Del Sur.

In another role, Maas served as a partner at Potomac Sports Properties, the exclusive developer of the PGA TOUR Inc. He also represented the TOUR on marketing, regulatory, legislative and tax matters.

In 2017 Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. appointed Maas to a term on the California Horse Racing Board. His passion for racing was well known and often saw him attending the races at tracks from Belmont Park to Del Mar.

“Like so many opportunities in my life,” Maas said, “work has allowed me to practice in areas I care deeply about, and hopefully, make a difference.”

Maas now becomes the 10th member of the DMTC Board.

“Fred’s energy, extensive executive experience and love for horse racing make him a wonderful fit for our Board,” said DMTC president Josh Rubinstein. “We’re delighted to have a man of his stature and ability join us in our quest to make Del Mar and horse racing better and better.”

Del Mar’s current 86th summer season runs through this Sunday. Racing will return for the 12th Bing Crosby Season starting on October 30, which will be highlighted by the fourth appearance of the Breeders’ Cup Championships at the shore oval on October 31 and November 1.
