The English-bred filly Green Carrera turned in a nifty stretch kick under Umberto Rispoli and came away a winner by neck in Friday’s Let It Ride Stakes at Del Mar as the shore oval kicked off its 13th Bing Crosby Season under delightful fall weather.
The 3-year-old bay by the top Euro sire Lope de Vega was well behind in the field of eight in the grass mile as the leaders set splits of :22.67, :46.14, 1:10.49 and 1:23. On the far turn, Rispoli swung his filly out and asked her for her best and she delivered through the lane.
Final time for the test was 1:34.51 and the winner – second betting choice in the field at 9/5 – returned $5.80 for her score. It was her fourth tally in her ninth lifetime start and she picked up $60,000 for the victory in the $102,100 test. She now can boast of earnings of $225,838.
Green Carrera is trained by the French expatriate Leonard Powell. He won this same race last year with Tempus Volat.
Finishing second in the mile was Sayjay Racing’s Deucari, who was a neck better than race favorite Jordi Bear, owned by Glen Hill Farm, Little Red Feather Racing and partners.
Racing resumes at Del Mar Saturday with a nine-race card and a first post of 12:30 p.m.
UMBERTO RISPOLI (Green Carrera, winner) – “She’s a nice filly with a good turn of foot. This is just about the right distance for her. I asked and she gave it to me. Anytime you are on a girl and you beat the boys, you know you’re doing good. This was fun.”
LEONARD POWELL (Green Carrera, winner) – “I was very happy with the early part of the race. On the backside Umberto was pretty confident. At some point we had to get going but he didn’t want to go too wide into the last turn. She had the momentum turning for home and down the stretch she showed a really good turn of foot. She was going against the boys but they do it all the time in Europe.”
