The $300,000 Caesars Sportsbook Del Mar Derby will have its 79th running Sunday and six 3-year-olds have answered the call for the Grade II, nine-furlong grass test that headlines the day’s 11-race program.

Additionally on the agenda for the holiday weekend card is the 51st edition of the Shared Belief Stakes, also for 3-year-olds, though this test goes on the main track at the distance of a mile. The race, previously known as the El Cajon Stakes, carries a purse of $125,000 and has drawn a field of five with three of them trained by Del Mar kingpin Bob Baffert.

Trainer Phil D’Amato has a pair of aces to play in the Del Mar Derby in Little Red Feather Racing or Madaket Stable’s Iron Man Cal and Little Red Feather, Sterling Stables or Naify’s The Padre. The two colts both performed well in the track’s pair of key prep races for the Derby – with Iron Man Cal proving a game second in the opening day Oceanside Stakes, then The Padre winning the La Jolla Handicap on August 3.

Iron Man Cal will have regular rider Antonio Fresu in the boot and The Padre will be handled by Umberto Rispoli, who was aboard for his La Jolla tally.

Also signed on for the Derby is Blinkers On Racing Stable, Corbett or Wagner, et al’s Freedom’s Not Free, who chased The Padre home in the La Jolla and prior to that was a winner of the grassy Cinema at Santa Anita on May 1. Leading rider Juan Hernandez has the call on him.

The Shared Belief is a case of beat Baffert if you can. The man who has won more stakes at Del Mar (182) than any other conditioner has the three favorites for the race in SF Racing, Starlight Racing, et al’s Citizen Bull, last year’s 2-year-old champion; Pegram, Watson and Weitman’s Gaming, last year’s Del Mar Futurity winner, and SF Racing, Starlight Racing, et al’s Privman, a double winner at the current meeting.

The Del Mar Derby will go as Race 9 on the afternoon, while the Shared Belief is slotted at Race 2.

Here are the full fields for the two stakes in post position order with riders and morning line odds:

Del Mar Derby – Jethorse’s Game Warrior (Hector I. Berrios, 6-1); Freedom’s Not Free (3-1); Augustin Stables’ Geometry (Kazushi Kimura, 8-1); Iron Man Cal (2-1); The Padre (5/2), and Michael House’s Mythical Reel (Armando Ayuso, 8-1).

Shared Belief – Privman (Kimura, 2-1); Bambauer, Cahill or Hicker’s Brother Brother (Fresu, 20-1); Gaming (Berrios, 9/5); Matson Racing, Brown or Naify, et al’s Smooth Cruisein (Kyle Frey, 10-1), and Citizen Bull (Hernandez, 7/5).

First post Sunday goes at 1:30 p.m. The Shared Belief will be off at 2 p.m. and the Del Mar Derby will go at 5:30 p.m.
