A pair of highlights of the Del Mar summer season – the Grade I, $300,000 Del Mar Debutante for 2-year-old fillies – and the Grade II, $250,000 John C. Mabee Stakes for fillies and mares – top the bill at the seaside oval on the final Saturday of the season.
Also on the agenda is the $100,000 Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf at a mile on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course.
The trio of black-type affairs add some serious pizazz to the final Saturday of the 31-day meet at the shore racing headquarters. Eleven races in all will be presented that afternoon beginning with a first post of 1:30 p.m.
Here’s a look at all three tests starting with the 75th edition of the Debutante, the championship race for young ladies at the session:
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has come away on top in the seven-furlong Deb 11 times already and he’s got three chances to make it a dozen. He’s got the possible favorite in Baoma Corp’s $900,000 2-year-old purchase Himika, who already has a pair of daylight scores on her record, including the Sorrento Stakes here on August 10.
Also on the Baffert team are Pegram, Watson and Weitman’s Explora, a smart winner in her debut against straight maidens August 17. Then there is Natalie Baffert’s Bottle of Rouge, who won for fun at Del Mar in her second outing on August 9.
Here’s the full field for the Deb (Race 6) in post position order with riders and morning line odds:
Explora (Juan Hernandez, 8/5); Himika (Kazushi Kimura, 2-1); Chris Codleman’s Fourlynnes (Hector I. Berrios, 20-1); Ruis Racing’s Grandma Mary (Ricardo Gonzalez, 8-1); Bottle of Rouge (Mike Smith, 5-1); Muir Hut Stable’s La Wally (Antonio Fresu, 101), and Spendthrift Farm’s Bourbon and Ginger (Mirco Demuro, 8-1).
The 68th running of the Mabee at nine grassy furlongs has drawn nine distaffers, including last year’s champ in CJ Thoroughbreds’ Hang the Moon. Also in the hunt are C R K Stable’s ultra-consistent Medoro and Newstead Stables’ Gimme a Nother, an eastern invader from the powerful barn of trainer H. Graham Motion.
Here’s the full lineup for the Mabee (Race 9) in post position order with riders and morning line odds:
US Equine, Burke or Sones, et al’s Mahina (Drayden Van Dyke, 12-1); Abbondanza Racing, Medallion Racing or McNulty’s Public Assembly (Fresu, 6-1); RyZan Sun Racing or Madaket Stable’s Mission of Joy (Berrios, 12-1); Medoro (Umberto Rispoli, 5/2); Rancho Temescal Thoroughbred Partners’ Hopeful (Kent Desormeaux, 8-1); CYBT, Nentwig or Pagano, et al’s Kentucky Gal (Edwin Maldonado, 12-1); Gimme a Nother (Hernandez, 3-1); Next Wave Racing’s Baltic Fire (Serafin Carmona, 12-1), and Hang the Moon (Kimura, 5-1).
The Juvenile Fillies Turf (Race 7) has procured 13 young lassies for its one-mile spin. A race like this is always a wide-open affair but a trio of the young misses deserved an extra look. They are Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Sabby Racing or Reimer’s La Ville Lumiere, who gets top rider Kimura in the boot and a 7/2 projection in the morning line. Also of note is Marsha Naify’s Queen Bay, with leading rider Hernandez up and a morning line set of odds reading 9/2. Finally, there’s Benowitz Family Trust, CYBT, McLean Racing Stables, et al’s Yours Sincerely, Gonzalez at 5-1.
This will be the 14th running of the Juvenile Fillies Turf, won last year by the multiple-stakes winner Thought Process.
