Harris Farms’ homebred Can’t Sleep, the 11/10 favorite in a field of nine allowance fillies and mares in the Del Mar feature Thursday, closed widest and fastest of all in the sprint headliner and came away a three-quarter length winner in smart fashion.
The 4-year-old daughter of Del Mar Derby winner Om ran five furlongs on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course in :57.17 and earned a first prize of $63,180 from the gross purse of $107,300. The victory was her third in her sixth start and she now shows earnings of $168,656.
She returned $4.20 for $2 to her backers in the midweek crowd.
Antonio Fresu, the second-leading rider at the current Del Mar session, was aboard the winner for trainer Carla Gaines.
Finishing second in the dash was Panela Ziebarth’s Sweet Gal of Mine, who had a half length on Hat Trick Racing, Wachtel Stable or Barber’s Andiamo Ragazza.
Racing resumes at Del Mar Friday with first post for the eight-race card being 3 p.m.
