A dozen distaff runners will take to the Del Mar lawn Sunday in the Osunitas Stakes. The one-mile overnight offering will provide a pot of $100,000 and reward the winner with a nice splash of black type.

Likely favorite in the feature is C R K Stable’s multiple-stakes winner Medoro, a 4-year-old daughter of Honor Code who has never been worse than third in her eight starts, including four victories. The bay lassie will break from Post 9 in the lineup and have the saddle services of Umberto Rispoli. She’s trained by veteran Peter Eurton.

The chief threat to the top one could come from Dutch Girl Holdings or Irving Ventures’s Queen Maxima, a daughter of the Kantharos stallion Buccchero, who comes into the contest off five consecutive victories. The chestnut 4-year-old began her run in an allowance test last December at Santa Anita, then wheeled back for another allowance tally in January at the same location.

Subsequently, “Queen” reeled off three consecutive stakes tallies, two at Santa Anita and another – her most recent outing -- on May 2 at Churchill Downs. All of those starts have been on turf in sprints.

Juan Hernandez has the call on Queen Maxima for trainer Jeff Mullins.

The Osunitas in the past has served as a jumping off point for distaff runners pointing toward larger turf stakes at the session. Those would include the Grade II, $200,000 Yellow Ribbon Handicap at a mile and one sixteenth on Saturday, August 9 and the Grade II, $250,000 John C. Mabee Stakes at nine furlongs on Saturday, September 6.

First post for Sunday’s 11-race card is 2 p.m. Racing will resume at Del Mar on
