The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club this Sunday will host the San Diego State Men’s Basketball team and the MESA Foundation, SDSU Athletics’ official partner for the advancement of Aztec basketball and community outreach.
The Aztecs’ 2025 squad is expected to be among the best in the west for the upcoming college basketball season and the track is delighted to host them for the afternoon in the Il Palio Restaurant with its sweeping views from its roof.
Sunday is also the track’s Family Fun Day with several kid-oriented events and locations in play throughout the afternoon and the track has added a special “Pop-a-Shot” basketball game to be part of the activities for the Aztec players and the kids on hand.
“Del Mar and the San Diego State Aztecs have been partners since way back and we’re fortunate to have their highly rated basketball squad and their coaches come join us for the day,” said Del Mar’s president, Josh Rubinstein. “We’ve got a terrific Labor Day weekend of racing on tap – including a sparkling renewal of our $1-million Pacific Classic – and having the Aztecs come be part of it makes it all the more special.”
The MESA Foundation and its network of community and business partners help SDSU’s student-athletes to use their platforms for positive outreach to local charities and non-profit organizations. Among the community partners who work in conjunction with MESA are San Diego Blood Bank, Feeding San Diego, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of San Diego, the Challenged Athletes Foundation and the ALS Association.
“MESA is grateful to partner with Del Mar Thoroughbred Club for our annual Day at the Races,” said Caroline Ripley, president and CEO of MESA. “Their hospitality makes it possible for our student-athletes, coaches and supporters to come together for a unique and memorable experience.”
Sunday’s card at Del Mar will consist of 11 races with first post at 1:30 p.m.
