A gateful of high-line 3-year-old fillies will meet the starter at Del Mar Saturday in the 69th edition of the Del Mar Oaks, a mile and one-eighth on the lawn that carries Grade I status and a $300,000 purse.
It will go as Race 8 on a 10-race card with an expected post time of 5:30 p.m.
Likely favorite for the affair is Estate of Brereton C. Jones, Little Red Feather Racing or Madaket Stables’ Thought Process, a chestnut daughter of Collected who comes into the test off a score in the race’s key prep – the San Clemente Handicap at Del Mar on July 19. That was her fifth victory in her seventh start and her bankroll now reads $344,200, the most of any horse in the lineup,
Grass specialist Phil D’Amato trains Thought Process and she’ll have Umberto Rispoli on board for the nine-furlong journey.
Chief threat to the top one is likely to be Medallion Racing, Weston or Shanahan, et al’s Lush Lips, a British-bred bay who has been racing in the east for trainer Brendan Walsh. The daughter of the No Nay Never sire Ten Sovereigns comes from Kentucky off a smart score in the one-mile Tenpin Stakes at Churchill Downs on June 28. She has three wins and three seconds in eight starts and will have top eastern rider Tyler Gaffalione on board.
Here’s the full field for the Oaks in post position order with riders and morning line odds: Little Red Feather Racing and Sterling Stable’s Slick (Mirco Demuro, 15-1); Chivalry Thoroughbreds Racing, et al’s Take A Breath (Hector I. Berraios, 12-1); Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners’ Velocity (Roberto Gonzalez, 15-1); California Racing Partners and Ciaglia Racing’s Resolve (Kent Desormeaux, 20-1); Lush Lips (3-1); Racho Temescal Thoroughbred Partners’ Edge of Mali (Antonio Fresu, 15-1); Augustin Stables’ Will Then (Juan Hernandez , 6-1); Oda Racing or Us Equine’s Firenze Flavor (Drayden Van Dyke, 15-1); Pegram, Watson and Weitman’s Casalu (Kazushi Kimura, 10-1); Thought Process (8/5); Ciaglia Racing or Christensen’s Miso Phansy (Armando Ayuso, 30-1) and – ion the also-eligible list – ERJ Racing’s Striver (Armando Ayuso, 30-1).
First post for Saturday’s card is 2 p.m.
