Jaime Renella’s Chismosa became the first horse at the Del Mar summer meet to score a triple when she won the $125,000 Generous Portion Stakes on the Labor Day Monday card. The daughter of Clubhouse Ride won the California-bred stakes by a length and three quarters to complete her seaside three-bagger with a straight maiden race (July 23), the CTBA Stakes (August 7) and today’s six-panel dash.

Chimosa again was ridden by Edgar Payeras, the young rider who won his first Del Mar stakes when he clicked with her in the CTBA. She is trained by veteran Rafael DeLeon. The dark filly earned a first prize of $71,250 to increase her earnings to $190,500.

Finishing second in the 30th edition of the Generous Portion was Repole Stable’s Uncontrollable, who had seven lengths on Reddam Racing’s Fun Money.

Chimosa ran the six furlongs in 1:11.18. As the 2-1 favorite she returned $6.00, $3.20 and $2.40.  Uncontrollable paid $3.40 and $2.60, while Fun Money returned $3.20 to show.

Earlier on the program Red Baron’s Barn and Vaya Con Suerte’s Teddy’s Barino battled through the lane and got up by a head for rider Mike Smith in the Tranquility Lake Stakes, an overnight event for older fillies and mares that carried a $131,000 purse.

Finishing second was race favorite Samurai Charm, owned by Downstream Racing, who was more than 10 lengths ahead of the third-place horse, Sarah Kelly and Jane Wiltz’s Velvet Slippers.

Teddy’s Barino, who is trained by Mark Glatt, picked up a first-place prize of $78,000 and increased her career earnings to $297,090. The 4-year-old gray filly by Grazen ran the distance in 1:35.59 and paid $6.00 to win.

The day’s racing was extremely formful with eight favorites winning the 10 races. The longest price on the day was $7.40 to win on Fried Asparagus in the day’s 6th Race.

Leading rider Juan Hernandez was the day’s riding star with four winner. Each of them was a favorite.

Racing will resume at Del Mar on Friday with a first post of 3 p.m.

EDGAR PAYERAS (Chismosa, winner) -- “She is an amazing filly. Through the turn I was too wide. I dropped in to save a little ground; when she feels the dirt in her face, she wants to go.  She was, like, pulling. So I said ‘Let’s go.’”

RAFAEL DeLEON (Chismosa, winner) – She is a power horse. She’s been training super every day. Soon as he threw her to the rail (in the stretch) I knew I was going to win the race. The jockey (Edgar Payeras), he knows the filly real good; he works her every single time and if she gets behind a horse, she responds and tries to pass.”
