S NY BOR, Riggs or Tencer, et al’s Catmansue, a 4-year-old colt switching from turf to dirt, proved extra game in the stretch to outfinish frontrunner Thirty Two Chunk late to earn honors by a half length in the featured attraction on Del Mar’s Friday program.
The California-bred son of the Unbridled’s Song stallion Cat Burglar was handled by veteran Hector I. Berrios in their six and a half furlong testing, covering the distance in 1:15.82 and earning a first prize of $29,520 from the $46,420 purse. He is trained by Jeff Mullins.
Thirty Two Chunk, owned by Muir Hut Stables, was speedy and strong throughout the sprint, but couldn’t quite hold off the winner. Paradis Farms Corp or Lambert’s Charlie Foxtrot finished three and a quarter lengths behind “Chunk” in third.
The winner returned $11.80 for $2 to his backers after proving best in the six-horse lineup.
Racing will resume at Del Mar Saturday with a first post of 2 p.m. The day’s feature is the Grade II, $250,000 Pat O’Brien Stakes, a “Win and You’re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.
