Bessie Coleman, a tall, gray homebred from the extensive string of California owner/breeder Nick Alexander, came running through the lane Thursday at Del Mar to register a half-length score in the Race 7 feature on the shore card.
The 5-year-old, a daughter of Alexander’s prize stallion Grazen, himself a gray, registered the third victory of her career and picked up a first prize of $48,600 after running the six furlongs in 1:10.59 under Diego Herrera. Steve Miyadi trains the winner, who paid $24.00 to her backers.
Finishing second in the allowance test for California-bred fillies and mares was Woodstock Racing Stable’s Redheaded Reba, who had a head on Jordan Wycoff’s Syntax in the show hole.
Nobody managed to hit the Pick Six on the afternoon and a carryover of $31,077 will be in play for Friday.
Racing resumes at Del Mar on Friday with first post slated for the usual 2 p.m.
