Eight California-bred 3-year-olds will test their mettle Friday in the 38th edition of the Real Good Deal Stakes, a seven-panel spin that is part of the Golden State Series limited to state-breds.

The series consists of 31 stakes worth $3.825 million run over the course of the year at racetracks in the state. The Real Good Deal carries a purse of $150,000 and is the second of eight offerings in the series conducted at Del Mar.

The Grazen stallion Tough Sunday has sired two of the runners in the feature -- Speedy Wilson and Shea Brennan, both owned and bred by California mainstay Nick Alexander. Speedy Wilson is the morning line favorite at 5/2, despite making his first start in almost nine months. Shea Brennan, running for the first time in more than six months, is listed at 4-1. Armando Ayuso has the call on “Speedy,” while Antonio Fresu will board “Shea.” Both colts are trained by Phil D’Amato and both come into the test having scored stakes wins in Cal-bred races last out.

Speedy Wilson was not an original nominee to the Real Good Deal and had to be supplemented for a fee of $1,500 in order to run.

Another runner of note in the soph special is Style Cat, listed at 3/1 in the morning line with leading rider Juan Hernandez in the saddle. The gelding by Curlin to Mischief is the most seasoned runner in the lineup with a dozen starts already under his belt, including a tally in the Echo Eddie Stakes at Santa Anita in April.

The Real Good Deal is expected to go off Friday at approximately 6:30pm as Race 6 on an eight-race card that begins at 4 p.m.
