A field of 10 California-bred 2-year-old fillies will face the starter Friday at Del Mar in the 34th edition of the Generous Portion Stakes. The six-furlong testing, which goes as Race 6 on and eight-race card, carries a purse of $100,000.
Notably for a race like this, all 10 of the runners have won a race.
Likely favorite in the dash is Williamson Racing’s homebred miss Daytona Diamond, a daughter of Tonalist who captured her debut smartly in a five and a half furlong straight maiden affair at Del Mar on August 8. The Carla Gaines-trained miss was ridden that day by Kazushi Kimura and he’ll get a leg up again Friday.
Another impressive last-out/first-out winner in the lineup is Palo Alto Baby, a Robert Traynor homebred by Sanford who was a galloping winner by nine and a quarter lengths on August 20 going five and a half furlongs. The chestnut miss made every pole a winner that day and now is back in action just over two weeks later. It will be a challenge for a young horse, but her first race has given her connections confidence to try stakes horses.
Another filly of note in the field is Stay Bossy, a daughter of Stay Thirsty who has a first, second and third in a three-race career so far. Bred by Terry Lovingier, who owns her with partners, the dark bay or brown miss gets top rider Juan Hernandez for this trip to the post.
The Generous Portion will have a post time of approximately 4:30 p.m. First post on the afternoon is the usual 2 p.m.
