In a replay of last November’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, Stormy Liberal came on in the stretch to defeat stablemate Richard’s Boy in the featured $88,840 Green Flash Handicap at Del Mar Friday.

As it happened in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, Stormy Liberal rallied from off the pace to collar Richard’s Boy in the final strides, winning by a nose in a fast :55.66 for the five furlongs on the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

The margin last November was a head as Stormy Liberal scored a stunning upset at 30-1. He was the 9-5 favorite in the Green Flash while Richard’s Boy went to the gate at 5-1.

Peter Miller trains both Stormy Liberal, the six-year-old gelded son of Stormy Atlantic who is co-owned by Rockingham Ranch and David Bernsen, and Richard’s Boy, the son of Idiot Proof owned solely by Rockingham Ranch. Drayden Van Dyke piloted Stormy Liberal while Tyler Gaffalione was aboard Richard’s Boy.

Third in the Green Flash was Touching Rainbows, a length and one-quarter behind Richard’s Boy, with Pee Wee Reese fourth another length back in the field of seven horses. Candy Crew was withdrawn from the original field.

Stormy Liberal earned $47,160 with his tenth triumph in 28 starts, his bankroll swelling to $1,308,930. He returned $5.60, $3.20 and $2.60. Richard’s Boy paid $5.20 and $3.40, while Touching Rainbows returned $4.80 to show.
