Snow Cloud, Apprentice Upset in Del Mar Feature

Irish-bred Snow Cloud and 19-year-old apprentice jockey Ruben Fuentes collaborated to stage a $25.80 upset in Del Mar’s feature race Thursday, a five-furlong sprint on the grass for older fillies and mares.

Snow Cloud, owned by DP Racing and trained by Jim Cassidy, rallied from next-to-last entering the stretch to score by a length in :58.17. Shy Carmelita, a 14-1 outsider, nosed out favored Lajatico for second, with Tapped another nose away in fourth in the field of eight horses. Everqueen was scratched.

Snow Cloud, a daughter of Kodiac, scored her seventh triumph in 31 starts. Going postward at 11-1, she returned $25.80, $10.80 and $5.20 across the board. Shy Carmelita paid $13.80 and $7.80, while Lajatico returned $3.60 to show.

For Fuentes, a native of Mexico City who has been competing in Arizona and New Mexico, the victory with his one and only mount during the first two days of the new season marked his first success at Del Mar. Competing with a seven-pound apprentice allowance, he reportedly is heading to Northern California to continue his career.
