Irish-bred River Boyne, a two-time stakes-winner at Santa Anita this year, will carry highweight of 122 pounds Sunday versus five three-year-old rivals in the Grade III $150,000 La Jolla Handicap at a mile and one-sixteenth over Del Mar’s infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

Sharing billing with the La Jolla will be the Grade II $200,000 Sorrento Stakes which lured ten two-year-old fillies running six furlongs.

River Boyne, to be handled by Del Mar’s leading rider thus far, Flavien Prat, for trainer Jeff Mullins, has won four of six starts in the United States, including the Pasadena in March and the  Rainbow in June at Santa Anita.

Opposing River Boyne, the likely favorite, will be Restrainedvengence, 121, Evan Roman; Move Over, 118, Tyler Baze;  Arawak, 118, Rafael Bejarano; Calexman, 118, Edwin Maldonado, and Inscom, 117, Martin Garcia.

Restrainedvengence won the restricted Oceanside Stakes on opening day, July 18, by three-quarters of a length in an 11-1 upset. Three sophomores from the Oceanside Stakes are back to try in the La Jolla – Calexman, who was third; Move Over, fifth, and Arawak, sixth.

Entered in the Sorrento Stakes, the major steppingstone to the Grade I $300,000 Del Mar Debutante on Sept. 1, are Madison’s Quarters, Mike Smith; Dragic, Bejarano; Bellafina, Prat; Lady Lucy,  Garcia; Dichotomy, Mario Gutierrez; Summerland, Baze; Stirred, Drayden Van Dyke; Reflect, Kent Desormeaux; Boujie Girl, Geovanni Franco, and Del Mar May, Corey Nakatani.

Coming in from Western Canada is Summerland, unbeaten in two starts at Hastings Park in Vancouver, British Columbia. She defeated colts by seven and one-quarter lengths in the Spaghetti Mouse Stakes most recently.

Post time for the first of nine races Sunday is 2 p.m.
