The gray speedster Mr. Disrespectful, longest shot in the field of seven at 36-1, zipped to the front early and just kept on going Saturday at Del Mar in The Chosen Vron Stakes at seven furlongs for California-breds.
The 6-year-old gelding by Smiling Tiger raced the seven furlongs in rapid fractions of :22.08, :44.33, 1:08.31 and 1:21.01 under rider Tiago Pereira. He paid $74.60 for a $2 win ticket after finishing three-quarters of a length best.
Mr. Disrespectful is owned by Antonio Mojarro and is trained by Craig Dollase.
He picked up $57,000 for the score and now has total earnings of $414,043 following his eighth lifetime victory.
Finishing second in the dash was Mi Familia Racing Stable’s Lovesick Blues, who was four and a quarter lengths better than Jay Em Ess Stable and Koriner’s Pure Madness.
Mr. Disrespectful had raced at Santa Anita only eight days earlier, finishing fifth of six runners in an allowance sprint. But trainer Dollase felt his charge was ready to go back at them and entered him in the stakes. He was most assuredly correct.
Racing will resume at Del Mar Sunday with a first post of 12:30 p.m. The feature on the day is the Betty Grable Stakes for California-bred fillies and mares.
TIAGO PEREIRA (Mr. Disrespectful, winner) – “My instructions were to be near the front, not too far back. But he wanted to go. He made the lead all on his own. I wasn’t asking him. You saw it today; he’s a nice horse. This was his own work.”
CRAIG DOLLASE (Mr. Disrespectful, winner) – “I told Tony (Mojarro, owner) this was my goal to win this race with him. We wanted to be close and then Tiago took the initiative and went on with him. Nobody else wanted the lead. The best thing you can do is not fight him. He opened up big fractions and won nicely. Eight day turnaround; I knew he was fit. Tiago knew he was fit because he rode him last time and we got the money.”
