Living The Life Scores in United States Debut

Making her United States debut, Irish-bred Living The Life rallied in the stretch to win the featured $80,000 BOMA San Diego Purse Thursday under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.

Living The Life, a four-year-old daughter of Footstepsinthesand trained by Gary Mandella, compiled a record of five wins in 19 starts while campaigning in England, including four victories in 13 races on synthetic surfaces similar to Del Mar’s Polytrack main track.

Living The Life won by 1 ½ lengths over Clearly Confused, who was a like margin ahead of 5-2 favored Hail Mary in the field of eight. Prettyhotprincess and Tribal Gal were scratched from the original line-up.

Living The Life raced the six furlongs in 1:09.72 and returned $12, $5.80 and $3.60 to her backers. Clearly Confused, who was piloted by Rafael Bejarano, paid $6.60 and $3.80, while Hail Mary paid $3 to show.

Bejarano, Del Mar’s riding champion for the past two summers, continued his recent success as he booted in two winners to move into a three-way tie for the top spot in the standings with Elvis Trujillo and Kent Desormeaux. Each has 14 victories through 16 days of the 36-day meeting.

Bejarano scored on two horses trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Wildling at $5.80 in the fifth and Tribal Jewel at $5.40 in the sixth.

Thursday’s attendance was 8,268.
