Team Valor and Barber’s English-bred Belvoir Bay, providing jockey Flavien Prat with his fourth victory of the afternoon, won the $150,000 Ken Maddy Stakes, the finale of a ten-race program which featured four Breeders’ Cup races Friday.
Belvoir Bay, a close second choice in the wagering at 3-1, scored by a length and one-quarter over the narrowly-favored Vigor, also 3-1 under jockey Jose Ortiz. Instant Reflex was third, with Little Jude fourth in the field of ten horses running five furlongs over the infield grass course.
Belvoir Bay, trained by Peter Miller, accomplished the sprint in :56.63 and paid $8.80, $4.20 and $3.20 after her sixth win in 16 starts. First money was $90,000, increasing the four-year-old Equiano filly’s earnings to $330,016. Vigor paid $4.20 and $3, while Instant Reflex paid $3.80 to show.
Prat’s earlier winners were Ritzy A.P. in the second, Dabster in the third and Battle of Midway in the seventh, the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Las Vegas Dirt Mile.
FLAVIEN PRAT (Belvoir Bay [GB], winner) – “Great day! (Prat won four races on the afternoon). She ran well all the way, but had a little trouble on the turn. When I asked her to run in the lane she really kicked it.”
PETER MILLER (Belvoir Bay [GB], winner) – “It’s always great to win one on Breeders’ Cup Day. She ran great and got a great ride. Flavien (Prat) did everything picture perfect. He just needed a spot through in the stretch and once a hole opened up he shot through well.”
