Lightly-campaigned Abel Tasman, ridden by Joe Talamo, outran 9-5 favored Fact of Life in a prolonged stretch battle to win Friday’s feature at Del Mar, a seven-furlong sprint for two-year-old fillies.

Abel Tasman, a daughter of Quality Road who broke her maiden at Santa Anita in her second start, tallied by a half-length over a game Fact of Life, with Lake Time, second choice in the betting, in third, another two and one-half lengths back. Auntjenn, who set the early pace, faded to fourth in the field of five juvenile fillies. Princess Karen and Jeanjeannie were scratched.

Abel Tasman, owned by Clearsky Farms and trained by Simon Callaghan, ran the distance in 1:23.06 and returned $11, $4.60 and $3.60. Fact of Life paid $3 and $2.20, while Lake Time returned $2.40 to show.

Saturday’s nine-race program will have a Pick Six carryover of $33,871 since there were no perfect tickets Friday. The Single Ticket Jackpot carryover is $7,258. Saturday’s Pick Six will begin on the fourth race.

Post time for the first race Saturday is 12:30 p.m.
