''Cool As Ever'' T-Shirt Design Winner Best Of 139 Entrants
San Diegan Shaun Menestrina proved the winner in a field of 139 entrants for Del Mar’s first-ever “Cool As Ever” T-shirt design contest and will see his art displayed on the front of 28,000 long-sleeve shirts that will be given away free on TVG Pacific Classic Day at the track, Sunday, August 25.
Menestrina, 37, titled his art “Everything Cool” and has filled up his design with a mixed bag of Del Mar scenes, signs and images using a colorful blue and gold palette.
The San Diego State grad and graphic designer for Scripps Health is a racing fan of longstanding who has been to Del Mar often. So besides the $1,000 prize he earned for his handiwork, he’ll also likely enjoy the other part of his reward -- a VIP Day at the Races for himself and three friends.
Menestrina, who freelances through his own design company – menedesign.com – has another connection to the place “where the turf meets the surf.” The Rancho Penasquitos resident has fond memories of taking “the old dirt road” that ran from Penasquitos down to Del Mar where he used to bring his board to surf, or take in the races or other events at the Fairgrounds.
The winning design was chosen by a fan vote from among the top 10 designs selected from the original field of 139. Menestrina was notified that he had won on August 7.
Fans submitted their designs between July 1 and July 22 and the top 10 candidates were chosen by a panel of judges. Voting on those shirts took place on-line between July 24 and August 4 and drew more than 2,000 responses.
The colorful shirts will be given away to all fans attending the races on Pacific Classic Day while supplies last. They’ll come in sizes S, M, L, XL and XXL.
TVG (Television Games Network), the nation’s leading horse racing network and wagering site, is the sponsor of both the T-shirt giveaway and the Pacific Classic.
