Twirling Candy Wins Del Mar Derby
The Craig Family Trust's brilliant Twirling Candy, sent postward the prohibitive 1-5 favorite on the basis of his perfect three-for-three racing record, came through as expected Sunday in the $300,000 Del Mar Derby but only after a stewards' inquiry pertaining to an incident leaving the clubhouse turn of the mile and one-eighth grass race.
La Vine wins NHC Entry in Sunday $50 Contest Finals
From a field of 55 in the Sunday $50 Handicapping Contest Final on-track at Del Mar, Dan La Vine, from Valley Center, CA, took home the Grand Prize. La Vine receives entry in the $1 Million National Handicapping Challenge in Las Vegas in January plus travel/accommodations and will have a chance to win the first prize payoff of $500,000.
Tell A Kelly Romps In Darley Debutante
Ike and Dawn Thrash's Tell a Kelly, ridden with perfect timing by jockey Alonso Quinonez, rallied from last place in the early furlongs with a devastating move entering the stretch to score impressively in the Grade I $250,000 Darley Debutante for two-year-old fillies Saturday.
Carryover Kept Del Mar Buzzing
September 2 certainly looked and felt like a late-in-the-meet Thursday at Del Mar. The lowest attended day of the 2010 season initially lacked the drama, atmosphere and intriguing subplots we've come to expect from our favorite seaside track. With local schools and the workweek in full swing, along with a card that carried zero stakes races, Del Mar's quiet afternoon was understandable, even expected.
11 Entered for Wednesday's Del Mar Futurity
Headed by triple stakes winner J P's Gusto, a field of 11 juveniles is scheduled to run Wednesday for the 2-year-old championship at the seashore in the Grade I, $250,000 Del Mar Futurity.
Mabee Stakes Rerun Shaping up in Palomar
In what looks like a perfect match-up, defending champion Gotta Have Her and John C. Mabee Stakes runner-up Lilly Fa Pootz will square off as the obvious favorites in Monday’s Grade II, $150,000 Palomar Handicap at 1 1/16 miles on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course.
