Analyze It, another talented runner from the East Coast-based stable of trainer Chad Brown, made a show of his opposition in the Grade III Cecil B. DeMille Stakes as he cruised to the easiest of victories in the one-mile grass contest for two-year-olds Sunday, closing day of the fourth Bing Crosby Fall season at Del Mar.
With Jose Ortiz in the saddle, Analyze It, the odds-on favorite on the basis of his lone performance, a six and one-quarter length maiden triumph at Belmont Park, was on or near the lead from the break, took the lead entering the stretch and breezed home four and one-quarter lengths on top in the stakes record time of 1:35.05.
Second was Pubilius Syrus, who was two and one-quarter lengths ahead of East Rand, with Choo Choo another head back in fourth in the field eleven juveniles.
Analyze It, a son of Point of Entry owned by William H. Lawrence, returned $3, $2.80 and $2.20 while earning $60,000 first money. Pubilius Syrus paid $5.20 and $3.60, while East Rand, an 80-1 longshot, returned $13.60 to show.
Brown also won the Grade I Matriarch Stakes Sunday with Irish-bred Off Limits, ridden by Joel Rosario.
Peter Miller won the Crosby season training title for the third time in four years, saddling 19 winners to runner-up Phil D’Amato’s nine. D’Amato had a training triple Sunday.
Leading rider was Flavien Prat who finished with 18 triumphs, including Hunt in the Seabiscuit Handicap Sunday. Second with 14 wins was apprentice Evin Roman.
JOSE ORTIZ (Analyze It, winner) – “I wasn’t expecting to be in front; I thought I’d sit off the speed. But he broke so well and he was going to easy, I just let him roll along. When we went to the three-eighths pole, I knew I had it won. I still had a lot of horse under me. I love riding horses like this; when you ask them to go, they go.”
KENT DESORMEAUX (Pubilius Syrus, second) – “He ran well. It was an eventful trip, but he ran well.”
DRAYDEN VAN DYKE (East Rand, third) – “He’s a cool horse. He’s fun to ride. You can do whatever you want with him.”
JOSE HERNANDEZ, assistant to Chad Brown (Analyze It, winner) – “Wow. He’s an amazing horse to work with and be around. I was a little worried early when the horse came up outside and tried to put some pressure on him. But I know this horse and he can be on the pace or off it. As soon as they turned for home, he was gone.”
