"Race Ready" Racehorse Sale
On Tap At Del Mar Saturday, July 25

For the fourth summer in a row, Barretts Sales will conduct a “race ready” racehorse sale at Del Mar, offering an opportunity for all – from first-time buyers to seasoned horsemen – to be involved in instant horse ownership and racing action at the seaside oval.

The sale, which will be held on the second Saturday of the meeting – July 25 -- will take place in the track’s picturesque paddock and begin approximately 20 minutes after the day’s final race has been run. A still-to-be-determined number of runners of all ages will be offered during the session.

California-based horses as well as out-of-state entrants are expected to be available for purchase. The out-of-staters – those horses who have been racing recently outside California – are eligible to immediately take part in the track’s highly popular “Ship and Win” program, now in its fifth year. Those type horses bought out of the sale who subsequently run at Del Mar earn an automatic check for $1,000, as well as the opportunity to add a 30% bonus on top of their regular purse earnings in their initial seaside start.

Barretts’ three previous “race ready” sales have gone from good to better to best at the track. The initial vendue in 2012 saw 25 horses sell for a total of $933,000, an average of $37,320. The 2013 session had 17 head bring $1,257,000, an average of $73,941. Last year’s auction had 19 runners bought for $2,147,000, an average of $113,000.

The 2014 sale underlined the “come one, come all” possibilities that exist for buyers. An unstarted 2-year-old filly named Rosie Brown sold for just $9,000. Less than an hour later, a 4-year-old graded stakes winning filly named Heir Kitty went for $750,000.

Barretts Sales, which has relocated their headquarters this year from their home of longstanding at Fairplex Park in Pomona to Del Mar, has moved the stabling location for sales horses to the spacious Horse Show Arena on the northeast corner of the 350-acre Del Mar Fairgrounds, adjacent to the track’s seven-furlong chute. The shift to the roomier arena will be positive for the horses and potential buyers wanting to view them.

Barretts personnel have indicated they plan on closing sale entries two weeks ahead of the sale, which would be on July 11.
