CTBA Stakes

MARIO GUTIERREZ (Sprouts, winner) – “I used her a little bit away from there to get a good position. Then Talamo’s filly (Harlington’s Rose) ran up alongside us and put the pressure on. But my filly handled it well. In fact, that’s the kind of experience that’s going to make her better. She’s mostly been running on her own and for her to feel the pressure today and keep on going is very good. The question now is can she run on? I don’t know. She might, or she might not. But you know we’re going to try.”

EDDIES CURL (Corey Nakatani, second) – “She just a really green filly. I was doing the best I could with her. I told the stewards that. I was trying my best.”

(Eddies Curl survived a stewards’ inquiry to maintain her placing.)

RAFAEL BEJARANO (Say’s Who, third) – “The four horse (Eddies Curl) pushed me out at the three-eighths (pole). She didn’t help my cause at all.”

EDWARD FREEMAN (Sprouts, winner; Eddies Curl, second) – “I’m just delighted for the horses, the stallion [Square Eddie] and the Reddams. This is the top of the list [of exciting moments] for me. I broke all the Square Eddies and to see these two come through like this is lovely. I’ve worked for Paul for about seven years here. I get his young horses ready to race at San Luis Rey Downs.”

Worried about Eddies Curl when inquiry went up? “Yes, I was worried. We need to fix her troubles with the gate. She’s done that before.”

(Freeman is a native of Newmarket, England, and was an assistant with trainers Roger Attfield and Mike Doyle in Canada for 15 years before coming to Southern California.)
