Best Pal Stakes

DEL MAR, CALIFORNIA                                      SUNDAY, AUGUST 4, 2013

Best Pal Stakes

ALONSO QUINONEZ (Alberts Hope, winner) – “He was traveling so easy out there; he was comfortable. I wasn’t sure where I was going to wind up on the backside, but I knew he was comfortable. On the turn I had thoughts of dropping down on the inside, but I saw how tight things were down there so I gave up the ground and went wide. It worked for the best. When that other horse (Celtic Moon) came to him, he fired again. Maybe even bigger and better for him next time.”

EDWIN MALDONADO (Celtic Moon, second) – “He ran a game race. It got tight on the turn.”

JOSEPH TALAMO  (Guns Loaded, third) --  “He impressed me today. He showed all that speed, then dug in and fought hard when he got passed in the stretch. And only his second race. He could be a good one.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO (Ontology, fourth) – “He came out of there (the gate) OK, but then he wanted to turn left. It cost me my position. But he didn’t fire like he did the other day. Just not as strong today.”

MIKE PUYPE  (Alberts Hope, winner) -- “I was kind of surprised by his first time out (win) because I had never really pushed on this horse. I think there’s a little bit more even than you’ve seen today. Obviously the next step is on to the Futurity ($300,000 Del Mar Futurity, Wednesday, September 4). We’ll give it a shot and see if he’s good enough.  He doesn’t owe anyone anything after this win (considering) what we paid for him ($40,000).”
