Del Mar PolyTrack
Friday, April 13th
The installation of Del Mar's Polytrack surface is -- literally -- in the home stretch.
Despite some delays in delivery of the high-silica sand from Illinois, most of the Polytrack surface layer has been completed. Only the far turn and portions of the home stretch remain to be completed.
Re-installation of the inner rail and other fixtures is about finished as well.
The first race horses -- from the barns of Doug O'Neill, Richard Mandella and Peter Miller -- are scheduled to try out the new surface later this month. Earlier, some show horses on the grounds for an event at the Del Mar arena by the 7-furlong chute tried out the surface and gave it the thumbs up.
An aerial view of the Polytrack installation, shot from a hot-air balloon, shows most of the track, except for the far turn, covered with the Polytrack top layer. |
