Crews began putting down the layer of porous macadam on the track surface on Friday morning, March 2, starting with the 7-furlong chute. Work will continue on Saturday with the first of the Polytrack now scheduled to be added on Wednesday, March 7.
Water hitting the Polytrack surface will filter through the macadam and stone aggregate to be collected and carried away by perforated pipes
The crushed granite in the 7-furlong chute is readied for the macadam.
Diagram shows the layers that will make up the completed Polytrack surface.
The hot macadam is applied over the stone aggregate.
The coarse aggregate and the consistency of the coating makes the macadam water-permeable, unlike traditional blacktop used for paving.
The surface is checked to be sure its smooth and level.
Water is sprayed on the surface of the freshly laid macadam to demonstrate that it is flowing through properly.
