With the top 8 inches of cushion removed from the surface of Del Mar's main track, work has begun on the sophisticated drainage system. The "backbone" drainage pipe has been installed and work is about to begin on the installation of perforated drainage pipes.
The top 8 inches of the old track surface was removed and the banking adjusted.
A trench is dug for the 10" backbone pipe that will carry off water drained from the surface of the track.
Workers install the drainage pipe just inside the location of the new inner rail. Installation of the draining under the rest of the track is about to begin.
Aggregate covers the newly installed pipe. The new banking of the track will have the dirt track at nearly the same elevation as the turf course.
