Del Mar PolyTrack
Friday, February 2nd Groundbreaking ceremonies were held at Del Mar for installation of the Polytrack racing surface. Officials from the 22nd District Agricultural Assn. (governing body for the Del Mar Fairgrounds where the track is located), the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, horsemen's groups and the City of Del Mar took part in the formal groundbreaking.
The engineered track, which consists primarily of silica sand, fibers, recycled rubber and wax, makes Del Mar the fourth horseracing facility in the country to install the advanced racing surface. Tracks using the engineered surfaces have found them to be safer and kinder to horses in all kinds of weather.
Earthmoving equipment is in the process of removing the top 8 inches of the old track surface in preparation for the installation of a sophisticated drainage system and the layers of the new Polytrack surface.
