Hoping to build on its first successful auction, Del Mar again will present a “race ready” racehorse sale in its paddock following the day’s races on the first Sunday of its upcoming meet, July 21.
The inaugural “race ready” sale in 2012 saw 25 horses sold and put in the racing mix during the track’s 37-day session. Barretts Sales and Racing, which conducted last year’s vendue, hopes to sell as many, or even more, runners for this go-round.
The idea behind the sale is twofold: To bring new owners into the game and to supplement entries with out-of-state horses, both at Del Mar and at other California tracks. Last year’s 25 sale horses subsequently made 36 starts during the 2012 Del Mar meet and more than 100 starts total in Southern California before the year was out. Two of those runners even became stakes winners on the circuit.
“We know of at least three brand new owners who bought in for the first time at last year’s sale,” said Kim Lloyd, general manager of Barretts. “We think others might have come on board, too. New owners are the real key for us with this sale. If we can develop new owners, we’ll have a real impact over the years.”
The out-of-state horses that make up the sale stock all immediately qualify for the track’s successful “Ship and Win” program, now in its third year. Horses bought out of the sale who run at Del Mar earn an automatic starter check for $1,000, plus a bonus that is now up to 33 1/3% on top of their regular purse share in their first seaside start.
The first year Del Mar had its “Ship and Win” program in place (2011), it drew 107 out-of-state horses who qualified for the bonuses. Last year it drew 137 eligible horses. The 2011 first-race purse bonus was 20%; last year that number rose to 25%.

The sale is expected to begin at approximately 6:30 p.m. following the day’s last race. Depending on the number of entrants, the session should run for about 90 minutes. There are no charges or fees involved to attend the event.
