The two “best beer festivals Del Mar has ever held” will be on tap during the seaside track’s summer meet, one of them early on in the session and the other during the meet’s final weekend.
The Beer Fests – first on Saturday, July 27 and then on Saturday, August 31 -- both will be presented at the western end of the facility near the Seaside Stage, which blends nicely with major events planned for those days. Following the day’s races on both occasions there will be topnotch musical acts presented on the Stage – Sammy Hagar, The Red Rocker, will perform on July 27, while reggae star Ziggy Marley is the headliner August 31.
The first “fest” will have a nice hometown feel to it with more than 40 San Diego brews offered.
Breweries confirmed so far include Ballast Point, Coronado, Green Flash, Manzanita, The Lost Abbey, Mission Brewing, Monkey Paw, Port Brewing and Stone Brewing. Many of these breweries were awarded medals for their craft during the San Diego International Beer Competition held in May. The Lost Abbey received the coveted “Champion Brewery” award, which is given to the brewery winning the most awards overall. The second “fest” will showcase over 40 IPA beers, which are known for their extra hops and special flavor.
San Diego has bloomed over the past decade as one of America’s premier locations for award-winning beers. Craft beer breweries have popped up all over the city and several brewery tours are now available to serious beer enthusiasts.
“These will be the best beer festivals Del Mar has ever held,” said Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s Chris Bahr, its director of events and promotions. “We’ve never had this many really good beers on hand before and it will be a true beer fan’s delight. All together, we will have more than 100 craft brews available.”
Beer fans will be able to purchase five 7-oz. samples of the various brews for $17. Full-sized beers also can be bought. There will be no admission charge into the “beer fest” location on either day.
Del Mar’s 37-day racing season begins on Wednesday, July 17 and runs through Wednesday, September 4. Racing is held Wednesday through Sunday with one extra day of sport on Labor Day, Monday, September 2.
