Del Mar Track Maintenance Schedule
On Tuesday, the Polytrack was power harrowed and roto-tilled to a depth of six (6") inches. The track was returned to training and racing depth and consistency through Gallop Mastering and watering.
Wednesday, there were three loads of water (by water truck) added to the racetrack between training and racing time. Additionally, there will be one load of water applied to the running lanes after the day's 2nd race.
Barring notable weather changes, Del Mar plans to follow a similar watering pattern each racing day, with the exception of Fridays and its later start.
On Fridays, following training hours, the track will be power harrowed to a depth of four (4") inches, then returned to training and racing depth and consistency through Gallop Mastering and watering. No additional water will be added to the track during the racing card Fridays.
This is the standard maintenance schedule for Del Mar's polytrack surface.
- Morning break 7:30 am
- Work with gallop masters @night / training depth 2 1/2
- After training, work with gallop masters at training depth
- Between training and racing, track will be watered and worked at racing depth to compact 1 1/2.
- Track will be worked with gallop masters at racing depth between each race.
- Water will be applied between races if temperatures dictate.
- After racing, track will be worked at training depth.
- On Tuesdays, the track will be power harrowed and rototilled as necessary, and then worked and compacted and prepared for training for Wednesday.
Gallup masters are the reel harrows that you see pulled by tractors prior to each race. They help provide for an even and level surface.
Track renovation is always at 2-1/2" depth. Then the track is tightened up for racing purposes, thus the dialing back to a depth of 1-1/2"
