Rancho Bernardo Handicap (Grade III)

DEL MAR, CALIFORNIA                                                SUNDAY, AUGUST 18, 2013

GARRETT GOMEZ (Reneesgotzip, winner) – “She left there good, but then she seemed to lose focus for a little bit. She was changing leads back and forth and I just tapped her on the shoulder to try to get her back on track. And then it was ‘oh, oh.’ She set sail and she was almost gone. She’s very, very fast and that’s her main weapon. But she’s got another dimension to her. She doesn’t have to be on the lead, but when she’s running like she did today you really don’t want to do anything else with her. She’s a nice one, no doubt. And you love to ride horses like her.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO (Winding Way, second) – “My filly was good today. But the winner was gone.”

MARTIN GARCIA (Sweet Marini, third) – “She (Sweet Marini) was good today. She ran well. But that other filly (Reneesgotzip) was a great filly today. She was a Grade I filly.”

PETER MILLER  (Reneesgotzip, winner) -- “You never want to be overconfident. But if you like the way they’re doing and you know they love this racetrack…  And it was a good setup. There didn’t look like there was any speed that could run with her. What can I say?  She’s just the fastest thing on four legs. The track record did surprise me a little bit, yeah. “

SPLITS:  :22.43  :44.46  1:08.18  1:14.48

The final time is a track record. The previous record was 1:14.93 recorded by the 3-year-old filly Carlsbad of 1:14.93 in this same race in 2009.

The stakes win was second of the meet for Gomez and his first in the Rancho Bernardo. He now has 44 stakes wins all told at Del Mar.
