Rancho Bernardo Handicap

DEL MAR, CALIFORNIA                                                                                            FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2009

RANCHO BERNARDO HANDICAP

$200,000, Grade III, 3-y-o & up, f&m, 6-1/2 f

TYLER BAZE (Carlsbad) – “So sweet. I’d say this is probably my sweetest moment in racing. To come back (off a broken finger) with one like her as my first mount -- and to win a stake and set a track record – it doesn’t get much better. I’m full of emotions right now. I’m really touched. This is so special. I am so happy that Dennis (owner D.E. Weir) and Jeff (trainer Jeff Mullins) stuck with me and allowed me to ride this horse back. She was goin’ so easy early. But she can do that. She’s a Ferrari. A guy can’t help but like riding a horse like her.”

MICHAEL BAZE (Lady Lumberjack) – “We had a perfect trip. I got to save all the ground and she gave me a good late run. You know, I worked that winner (Carlsbad) for Tyler (who was injured) last week when she went in :57 (:57 3/5). She was going so easy under me and I looked at my watch after three (furlongs) and I saw :34 and so I took a big hold. And she still goes down there in :57. I told Tyler (today) ‘Just hang on. Don’t fall off. You’ll win.’”

ALONSO QUINONEZ (Golden Doc A) – “Perfect trip. Just the way we wanted it. I got to sit down inside and save and then we got through and she fired. It was a good one for her.”

JEFF MULLINS (Carlsbad) -- “We’ve been so confident in this filly. When you have a stone cold sprinter and you move back from a turf route, it’s a good thing. She didn’t have to have the lead and Tyler was able to get her to turn it down early, get her to settle and then get her to turn it on big when he asked her. This was a good day for her. She was acting really good and that gave us a ton of confidence.”

NOTE: Carlsbad is not Breeders’ Cup eligible, so if she runs in the Filly and Mare Turf, the owner will have pay the supplemental fee.
