Oceanside Stakes, First Division
DEL MAR, CALIFORNIA WEDNESDAY, JULY 17, 2013
RAFAEL BEJARANO (Gervinho, winner) – “I didn’t want the lead with him; I was happy where I was. All the way around there I was just trying to improve my position. When I saw the six horse (Freakin Rocket) go, I went with him. When it came time, my horse gave me a big run. A very big run. I knew I was in good shape when he cut loose. He was ready for this mile today. And I think he’ll go on. A mile and a sixteenth, more. He’ll go on.”
JULIEN LEPAROUX (Greeley Awesome, second) – “He’s a fighter. I like him a lot for that. He gave me a really good run today. He was relaxed. I think he’ll take it farther. He should like that.”
MIKE SMITH (Freakin Rocket, third) – “I had the horse I thought I’d have to beat (Undrafted) in a pickle (stuck down on the inside). And I wanted to keep him there so I had to move with my horse a little sooner than maybe I wanted to, it being his first time going long and all. But what are you going to do? If I don’t make that move, that horse (Undrafted) gets out and he’s maybe gone. But this was a good race for him. With experience, he’ll only get better.”
JOEL ROSARIO (Undrafted, fourth) – “I had my troubles today. I had to check more than once. I chose to stay inside and save ground and then I couldn’t get out. If I get out, I think I’m right there.”
CARLA GAINES (Gervinho, winner) -- “We were pointing for this race when we brought him back. The race at San Francisco (Silky Sullivan, June 9, Golden Gate Fields, 2nd), he definitely needed the start. The track up there was probably not to his liking; he’s a big, big horse and he had a tough time going over that turf course. But it set him up for this, it really did. He beat a tough field and the time was very, very good, so I’m really excited.”
