JOHN C. MABEE STAKES
$350,000, Grade I, 3 & up, f & m, 9 f (T)
ALEX SOLIS (Magical Fantasy) – “She’s been working great. She just seems like a different horse. She’s so full of confidence. She loves it here at Del Mar. At the quarter pole I had a good position and I thought I was in good shape. I was inside, but I had so much horse I thought I could push someone out of the way if I had to. As it worked out, I got through and everything was fine. It’s going good right now. I’m riding good horses. And good horses can make you look good.”
TYLER BAZE (Gotta Have Her) – “She’s a good, good filly and she ran a great race today. We just got beat by a good one. That’s all.”
VICTOR ESPINOZA (Patricia’s Gem) – “We got a nice run. The pace was fine and she was running OK. She’s still learning. She’s only had a few races (this was the 4-y-o’s 7th start) and she’s only going to get better.”
BRICE BLANC (Visit) – “In the end they just outran me. The winner was inside me and I just couldn’t keep up. She has been a little slow switching leads, but she at least did that today.”
JOEL ROSARIO (Tuscan Evening) – “She was a little slow coming out of there. She didn’t seem to like it in among horses, either. I think she wants to be clear. At the end, she got tired.”
PATRICK GALLAGHER (Magical Fantasy) -- “She looks like she’s improving a little bit at a time. She has a lot of enthusiasm and she looks really good. We’re very lucky she likes it here. A Grade I last year [Del Mar Oaks] and a Grade I this year. She beat a lot of nice fillies. She had to run to catch them. I was thinking if she could get out she’d be OK. Alex tried to get out once and it didn’t work, but then he got her outside and she came running. I was a little worried at the early fractions. Everybody was talking about a lot of speed in the race, but all the jocks rode smart races.”
Going on to the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf? The win gives her an automatic bid. “That would be something nice to think about. To go and have a good time with that kind of race.”
