I’M SMOKIN STAKES
$100,000 2-y-o, Cal-bred, 6 f
VICTOR ESPINOZA (John Scott) – “He’s a talented colt and I didn’t want to rush him. The plan was to lay back and then make a late run. I could see they were going quick up front and I thought they’d come back to me. I took him wide and kept him safe and timed it right. He gave me what we needed. He’ll go on, too. The farther the better.”
ALEX SOLIS (Daylight Storm) – “I’m proud of how well he ran. He tried hard. And that was quick time for these horses.”
MICHAEL BAZE (Tribal Face) – “He broke good and I didn’t want to go with the early speed so we eased back a bit. On the turn I tapped him on the shoulder and he went. He just got tired. He needed the race.”
TYLER BAZE (Yogaroo) (Eased and Baze dismounted shortly after the finish line) – “I wasn’t sure. He got really tired. Then he whinneyed real loud on me. Last time I had a horse do that, he dropped dead shortly thereafter. I think he might have a breathing problem. But I wasn’t going to take any chances.”
CARLA GAINES (John Scott) -- “I was a little concerned early when he was so far back. He was that way in his maiden race but it’s easier to make up ground in a maiden race. It’s a lot harder if you’re running against winners like today. I can hardly wait to stretch him out. We think he’ll be a really good two-turn horse.”
