I’m Smokin Stakes

DEL MAR, CALIFORNIA                                              MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2013

VICTOR ESPINOZA (Jedi Mind Trick, winner) When I ride for John (trainer John Sadler), I have so much confidence. (This is the fourth stakes they have won together at the meet.) Since the start of the meet weve been lucky together and the way he trains horses, you know youre always on something live. Today he didnt give me any special instructions; just said ride it as it comes up. My horse broke well and I was able to get a good position. The last part we had to run down that other horse (Gangnam Guy), but I thought we would. I knew Id have something left for the final sixteenth.

RAFAEL BEJARANO (Gangnam Guy, second) I knew that winner would be coming late and I tried to get that first jump to be far enough in front. My horse ran well. He just couldnt quite hold on.

ALEX BISONO (Ashleyluvssugar, third) Good race for him. Hes green, but he ran well and hell only get better because of it.

JULIEN LEPAROUX (Aotearoa, fourth) He was pretty good today. He broke well and was running OK. He just went flat in the last part.

JOHN SADLER (Jedi Mind Trick, winner) -- This little horse came up for sale and we thought we could win a starter allowance with him, and we did. Then we thought wed try the Cal-breds. Dick Hines is the one who spotted him in Northern California. Tony Diaz, an old-time jock, trained him and he called me on the phone and kind of gave me good (information) because we didnt have him long before the first race for us. The purses are so good here to win a starter allowance, he paid for most of himself on the first race. Were into gravy time. "

SPLITS:  :22.33  :45.25  :57.19  1:09.76

The stakes win was the fourth of the meet for Espinoza (all with Sadler) and his fifth in the Im Smokin. He now has 77 stakes wins at Del Mar.

The stakes win was the sixth of the meet for Sadler (the most by any trainer at the session) and his first in the Im Smokin. He now has 48 stakes wins at Del Mar, which ties him with D. Wayne Lukas at sixth-most ever among all trainers.
