$85,000, Overnight Stakes, 3 & up, 5 F (T) JOE TALAMO (California Flag) – “Oh, it’s fun to ride one like him. He’s so much fun. I’m so proud of him right now. He had to run hard all the way. Martin’s horse (Martin Garcia on Bamaha Breeze) came right up on me and wouldn’t let loose. But my horse was running easy. Before, when a horse would lay up on him, he’d just want to cut loose. But he’s better now. And he took off down the lane. He wasn’t going to let them get him. I think he’s better now than he’s ever been. He’s really going good.” JOEL ROSARIO (Delta Storm) – “My horse ran good. But the winner…… What are you going to do with one like that?” MIKE SMITH (Tenga Cat) – “We had a good trip and he ran great. He’ll improve off this race.” BRIAN KORINER (California Flag) -- “He’s been working spectacularly but that doesn’t translate to racing. It’s always up in the air what they’re going to do until they race. He’s a very fast horse on the grass, probably the fastest I’ve ever had. I’d like another chance in the Breeders’ Cup [Turf Sprint], but we won’t know until later. We’ll see how he comes out of the race and then look ahead. I think we’ll go again in the Morvich [Handicap] and then maybe in the Breeders’ Cup.” NOTE: California Flag won the Morvich last year (setting a course record) and finished 10th in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. California Flag is owned and was bred by Keith Card of Murietta, CA. The stakes win was the first of the meet and the first in the Green Flash for Joe Talamo. He now has seven stakes wins at Del Mar. The stakes win was the first ever at Del Mar for Brian Koriner. |
